The UN Security Council has approved a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza

(CNN) — The UN Security Council on Monday approved a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan, the immediate and unconditional release of hostages and the “urgent need” for aid to Gaza.

The vote ended with 14 votes in favor. The US abstained, but did not exercise its veto power.

Russia had proposed an amendment that was not ratified due to a lack of votes.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said it was “unacceptable” to replace the word “permanent” with weaker language in the operative paragraph.

“We are all instructed to vote on a text that contains the word 'permanent' and anything else can be seen as permission for Israel to continue its attacks,” he said.

The Russian delegation proposed an oral amendment to withdraw the word “permanent” from the draft, but it did not pass, according to direct reports from the UN.

Following the resolution's passage, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for its implementation.

“The Security Council has passed a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” he said, adding, “This resolution must be implemented. Failure to do so is unforgivable.”
