Never leave these memories.
Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio may have had chemistry as Rose and Jack in Titanic, but their kissing scenes were too awkward for the British actress.
According to Winslet, 48, the intimate relationship with DiCaprio, 49, “was not at the desired level.”
“So we keep doing this kiss and I have a lot of pale makeup,” she said. During an interview with Vanity Fair, which was published on June 12. “And I like to check our makeup between takes.”
She continued, “And I would end up looking like I was sucking on a piece of chocolate caramel after every take because his makeup would explode on me.” “And it looked like there was a little bit missing from his face because there was a big pale portion from all my makeup that got on it.”
The “The Reader” actress revealed that filming the infamous “I’m Flying” scene was particularly “such a mess” and “a nightmare.”
“Leo couldn’t stop laughing. We had to reshoot this about four times because of the light… [director James Cameron] “I wanted the light to clearly define this,” Winslet recalls.
“So I hid here and here [in her blouse]”I got his makeup, brushes, and sponge, and my makeup, brushes, and sponge on the other side,” she continued. “And between takes, I would reapply our makeup.”
But makeup mishaps weren’t the only obstacle the actors had to face while filming the scene. Winslet talked about how uncomfortable her clothes were, too.
“Look at that and see how I couldn’t breathe in that bloody corset,” she noted while watching a replay of the scene.
Winslet and DiCaprio became best friends on set, but there were rumors that Winslet and Cameron, 69, were feuding at the time. In 1998, she told Rolling Stone She would “just work with Jim Cameron again for a lot of money.”
“There’s a part of me that’s almost sad that the stupid speculative things talked about the movie Titanic at the time overshadowed my actual relationship with it.” Winslet told Variety. “He knows I’ll be ready for anything. Any challenge, any bit of guidance you give me? I’ll try it.”
“There was no disagreement between us,” Cameron told the outlet. She suffered from a bit of postpartum depression when she left Rose. She and I have talked about the fact that she really goes deep, and that her characters leave a lasting and sometimes dramatic impression on her.
Winslet received harsh remarks about her body after the premiere of “Titanic,” and found the comments “bullying” and “borderline offensive.”
Despite the negatives, the actress said she was overall proud of the 1997 film.
“I feel like this is the movie that keeps on giving. Whole other generations of people are discovering the movie or seeing it for the first time, and there’s something extraordinary about that.
Winslet most recently starred in the 2024 MAX miniseries “The Regime” and the 2021 HBO show “Mare of Easttown.” She told Variety that she would “probably” play Mary again.
“Playing her was like that: I felt refreshed and rejuvenated by how disgusting she was every day,” she said. “She was warm and funny, and her ability to see everyone was so wonderful.”
