Verstappen refuses to answer press conference questions after swearing penalty

Max Verstappen largely refused to answer questions at the official FIA press conference after qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The three-time Formula 1 champion qualified second behind title rival Lando Norris, with Lewis Hamilton following grid interviews, and went into the usual FIA press conference for the top three to interview the media and host Tom Clarkson.

However, during Thursday’s pre-weekend session, Verstappen was slapped in the face when talking about the setup changes made to his car last time out in Azerbaijan, saying they “messed up” the car, before Clarkson reminded him of his language.

The player did not repeat the insults again, but the referees summoned him on Friday and later sentenced him to community service because of the language he used.

When Clarkson asked Verstappen in the post-qualifying session about his feelings, the Red Bull driver was terse, largely refusing to answer questions, as the transcript below shows, and only giving a single answer that went beyond a few words.

MV: It’s unknown, these (his answers) are not directed at you (Clarkson), so don’t worry, I don’t want to bother you.

The press conference was then opened to the media, with Verstappen largely refusing to take part in answering questions.
