Sony is still planning to buy more studios, despite the acquisitions of Bungie and Haven over the past two months.
Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan said: The official PlayStation podcast That first-party success for Sony has allowed it to invest in more studios.
“We’re in a really good place with PlayStation Studios right now, and we’ve been in the last few years,” he said. “The critical and commercial success of the games they make has given us permission to invest heavily in content creation.
“We are organically developing our studios and growing through acquisitions. We acquired five studios during 2021. We are in discussions with Bungie and have more planning in place. This leads us into a cycle, a virtuous cycle where success breeds success.”
This organic growth has seen Sony acquire seven studios since the beginning of 2021, led by its $3.6 billion purchase of Destiny developer Bungie in February, for a total of 18 in-house developers.
This investment in new studios is also the reason why Sony has not included first-party games in its updated PlayStation Plus tiers, as Ryan recently explained. “If we do that with the games we make at PlayStation Studios, this virtuous cycle will be broken,” he said last month (which he repeated in the podcast).
“The level of investment that we need to make in our studios is not going to be feasible, and we think that the additional impact on the quality of the games we’re doing won’t be something that gamers will want.”
