‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ lands IGN 10/10, Metascore has fallen to tie with ‘Tears’

Yeah, yeah, who cares what IGN says. We may live in the era of the modern “bad game of press,” but that’s usually from the same people who argue about Metacritic scores constantly. And as the largest English-language video game site by a wide margin, one that has survived the death of many others, I wouldn’t say it’s not important to IGN. Delivers the perfect score for the great game.

IGN’s philosophy is that a 10/10 game doesn’t have to be completely flawless, because that’s literally impossible, but when you look back at the past 10/10s over the years, that puts Baldur’s Gate 3 in the same company as The Elden Ring, The Last of Us Part 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, Pokemon Red and Blue and Ocarina of Time. I’m less convinced by some of the dozens more like Deathloop and Overwatch (although maybe it’s Overwatch in the context of the era of its launch) but to each his own. Here it is The full list if you want to see it. PC Gamer also gave it one of the highest scores of all time, 97/100.

Now that there are a lot of registered reviews posted, we can see that Baldur’s Gate 3 has 27 10/10 reviews out of a total of 55. The lowest individual score is by Eurogamer with 8/10. 52 out of 55 reviews on record are 9/10 or higher.

This is why the overall score is close to the best ever. A few newer scores below 10 have already dropped their score from an insane 97 to a still insane 96. This means that it is now tied for Tears of the Kingdom this year, even though it still has less than half the ratings. It also lost the title of “Highest Scoring PC Game of All Time” to Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. However, it is still associated with… Half-Life 2, GTA 5, and Bioshock. Only six computer games in history have 96 games, and Baldur’s Gate 3 is among them.

I’ve said before that I think the game is now a front runner for Game of the Year, at least for a show as big as The Game Awards based on industry wide voting. I said earlier that Tears of the Kingdom has a lock, but now I have to restore that. Starfield is the primary card here, but we’ll see how it stacks up against other big AAA Bethesda games that have scored high and won GOTY honors before. Any other year this might be the boot, but 2023 is the nuts.

So, Baldur’s Gate 3 continues trucking, and it’s a resounding success beyond what anyone could have expected.
