Blake Snell’s first Giants season hasn’t gone well at all, and his recent rehab start has only added to the problems.
The 2023 NL Cy Young Award winner was just introduced 1 2/3 innings for the Sacramento RiverCats On Sunday, in which he allowed three hits, he had two earned runs while walking three strikeouts. He didn’t score any hits.
Snell, who has a groin strain, expressed frustration after his 51-pitch game against the Round Rock Express, alluding to potential pressure from the Giants to return before he’s ready.
“I don’t feel like myself yet,” Snell told reporters in Sacramento. San Francisco Chronicle Shayna Rubin). “It’s just: ‘We need you.’ We need you. We need you.’ It’s not like, “Let’s fix it” and I have to deal with it.
“I want to be healthy and 100% healthy, and I wasn’t doing that. I was just fighting to get back quickly. That’s my opinion. I’m frustrated with it. And you’re not getting the product that I should be, and that’s very frustrating.” “I want to go out there and dominate and play the way I play, but more importantly I want to be there.”
Snell suffered a hip injury during his June 2 start against the New York Yankees and was placed on the injured list the next day.
This is the second time Snell has been out for an extended period since signing with the Giants, as he suffered an adductor strain that sidelined him for four weeks in April and May.
Injuries have devastated the Giants’ rotation recently and the team as well The NL Wild Card standings declined With the middle of the season quickly approaching. If San Francisco is putting behind-the-scenes pressure on Snell to return quickly, those two facts are likely a big reason why.
The season is turning away for the Giants and the pressure is mounting on everyone in the organization.
Snell signed with the Giants 10 days before the start of the 2024 MLB season, so he did not have proper spring training to build his arm strength. Instead of starting a minor league game or two before joining the big league club, he pitched simulated games and threw practice sessions.
In just six MLB appearances for the Giants this season, Snell has a 9.51 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 23 2/1 innings. He couldn’t get through five full innings in any of his games, going 4 2/3 twice.
The Giants (36-42) have lost five straight games, and although they are just three games away from the final wild-card spot, the Miami Marlins (27-50) and Colorado Rockies (27-51) have worse records in then I.
The Giants need Snell back as soon as he’s ready, but it appears he may need more time than they have.
