Delta flight turned back after maggots fell on passengers from the overhead bin Air transport

Dissatisfaction with air travel took a new turn when maggots descended on passengers on a Delta flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, on Tuesday.

A passenger reportedly brought rotten fish onto the plane in a carry-on bag, placing it in an overhead bin, before the maggots broke free and fell onto passengers seated below. The Independent reported.

Philip Schott, a Dutch citizen who lives in Iowa, told local news Fox 2 He saw at least a dozen caterpillars falling on a woman mid-flight.

“I don't really know what was going through my mind. I was trying to process it – disgust is one thing, of course. “We had to wait there for help to actually come.”

Schott noted that the flight attendants tracked the worms until they reached the passenger's bag in the overhead compartments and found a fish wrapped in a newspaper. After the man claimed it belonged to her, Schute said flight attendants took her and the pilot announced the flight would return to Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.

In a statement provided to Fox 2, Delta apologized to its passengers: “Their flight was interrupted due to an incorrectly packed carry-on bag. The aircraft returned to the gate and passengers were placed on the next available flight. The aircraft was taken out of service for cleaning.”

Another passenger named Kelsey He tweeted about the incident in a post that has since been deleted: “It's really cool to spend 2 hours on an 8 hour @Delta flight to Amsterdam and find out there are rotten fish and larvae riding with us.”

The passenger said they and others on the plane were allegedly given 8,000 free air miles, compensation for a hotel room and a $30 meal ticket for the inconvenience.
