Max Verstappen continued his dominant form this season to take pole position in a wet qualifying in Montreal. The Red Bull driver closed out fifth for the year, ahead of a surprise deal from Haas for Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso for Aston Martin.
Verstappen set a time of 1m 25.858s, finishing a whopping 1.244 seconds ahead of Hulkenberg – who set his fastest lap before the red flags brought about by Oscar Piastri’s crash in Q3 – with Alonso a further two tenths behind in third.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell were fourth and fifth respectively for Mercedes, ahead of Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, who was followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris, in seventh.
Carlos Sainz was eighth for Ferrari – but was due to see the stewards in connection with a handicap incident with Pierre Gasly in Q1 – with Piastri setting the ninth fastest time before crashing at the end of qualifying into the barrier. Alex Albon is closing in on the top 10 for Williams.
