Josef Newgarden cashes a record check for an Indy 500 win

INDIANAPOLIS – Josef Newgarden’s first win at the Indianapolis 500 earned him a record-breaking payday.

The Team Penske driver will receive a check for $3.666 million at Monday night’s victory celebration. The prize for the winner comes from a total purse of $17,021,500.

Both the purse and the winner’s payout are Indianapolis 500 records, according to IMS. The purse was nearly $1 million larger than last year’s total and the Newgarden winner’s check is over $500,000 more than what Marcus Ericsson earned in 2022.

Ericsson earned $1.043 million to finish in second place.

Benjamin Pedersen was named Rookie of the Year and received a $50,000 bonus for earning his team $215,300.
