Krypto the Superdog joins James Gunn’s “Superman” movie

Superman’s canine best friend will join him on screen next year.

Krypto the Superdog will appear in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film, the director confirmed on social media on Tuesday. He made the announcement in honor of October, which is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month.

“Krypto will hit screens in Superman this summer,” Gunn wrote. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after we started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a backyard hoarding situation with 60 other dogs and had never known humans, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came and destroyed our house And our shoes and our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would let us touch him. I remember thinking: Oh my God, how hard would life be if Ozu had superpowers – and so Krypto came into the script and changed his appearance The story where Ozu was going to change my life. What better time to debut than the no-good boy Krypto? #AdoptAShelterDog month. By the way, today Ozo is, for the most part, a very good boy.

Krypto, a super-powered dog from Superman’s home planet of Krypton, has appeared in dozens of DC animated films, but never in a live-action film. He will make his debut with Gunn’s Man of Steel director David Corenswet next summer before joining Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, set to debut in June 2026.

Since his appearance in the 1955 DC Comics version of Superboy, Krypto has always appeared as a white dog with a gold collar and red cape matching Superman. Just like the famous Kryptonian hero, Krypto has superhuman strength, intelligence, and senses. Dwayne Johnson previously voiced the dog in 2022’s “DC League of Super-Pets,” opposite Kevin Hart as Batman’s canine crusader Ace.
