In addition, the new iMac with the 10-core M4 chip is the first Mac ever to support an external 8K display at 120Hz, and the computer also supports up to two external displays with 6K resolution at 60Hz. This is a very noticeable upgrade, as Apple’s lower-spec Macs like the MacBook Air, entry-level MacBook Pro, and previous iMac models were mostly limited to a single external display, at least on an official basis.

Two exceptions are the 14-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with the M3 chip, which support up to two external displays, but only when the laptop lid is closed. The other exception is the Mac mini, which has an HDMI port for connecting a second monitor. DisplayLink adapters have also been a viable solution for multiple external displays since Apple’s first Macs with the M1 chip launched in 2020.

But the 10-core M4 chip is noteworthy in that it will bring proper support for two external displays to more low-end Macs for the first time since the launch of Apple Silicon, without the need for any special tricks. No more DisplayLink adapters, and no need to close the lid of your MacBook. This is a major and long-awaited advance for Apple silicon.

Apple’s high-end Macs have supported multiple external displays since the launch of MacBook Pro models with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in 2021.

Apple is expected to announce a new 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 10-core M4 chip this week, and an alleged leak has already confirmed that the laptop will support two external displays with the lid open. Next year, the M4 chip should expand to the MacBook Air, and 10-core configurations should also support two external displays.
