A unique opportunity for local artists to see their original work launched on a gargantuan new Brighton-based development has arisen. The call to tender for the Edward Street art installation is live as of today. If you’re an experienced local artist then read on…

What is the Edward Street Quarter?

Edward Street Quarter is a brand new £120m re-imagining of the former American Express House building in the Carlton Hill area of the city. It will be an eclectic public space, funded by First Base and Patron Capital. The developers’ vision will see a collection of office space, residential units, leisure and retail outlets as well as a public meeting area. Work on this exciting new facility has already started and it is hoped that 1000 new jobs will be created during the construction process.

What is expected of the art installation?

Local artists are being asked to submit plans for a large-scale design that will be printed on an exterior wall of one of the new Edward Street Quarter buildings. The emphasis for the proposed piece will be on locality and heritage. The organisers of the tender have suggested the following themes: the community’s stories and local history; the traditions of the ‘fisher folk’ who originally occupied the neighbourhood; the impressionist paintings of William Turner; and the resurrection of Mighell Street, which will be reopened once Edward Street Quarter is complete.

What does the project director have to say?

First Base mogul Steve Eccles told us: We’re pleased to launch the first and most prominent of our public art competitions for the development. This is a chance to collaborate with us in making Edward Street Quarter a memorable place for the community to live and work and, of course, to see your artwork proudly displayed as part of the vibrant scheme. We’d like to see ideas from as many local artists as possible.”
