This Friday at the Vatican, with Pope Francis, representatives of people’s movements from across the region commemorate the tenth anniversary of the first World Assembly that brought together humble, marginalized and disenfranchised workers’ organizations from five continents. The commemoration, which bears the slogan “Planting the flag against dehumanisation”, will include an intervention by the Chief Pontiff and a symposium of representatives of popular movements and the Church. Its organization is the headquarters of the Dicastery for Integral Human Development.
The first meeting was a milestone for the voice of the Church and people’s movements to the shared cry of the 3Ts: roof, land and work: “There is no family without a home, no farmer without land, no worker without rights, no person without. The dignity of work.”
“The idea of this anniversary is to close one phase and open another. We have proposed to renew the Order of Organization, so that there are young people,” said Juan Grapois in an interview on Vatican Radio, and explained the event’s motto, “Planting the Flag Against Humanity”: “What we believed in was an institutional order. , at least where social justice is proclaimed as a positive aspect, that is, human dignity, is being questioned today. Various leaders of popular movements and the Church participated in the event, such as the President of the Dicastery for Integrated Human Development Service, Cardinal Michael Cerny, Cardinal Peter Turkson and the leaders of the Founding Center for Inter-Popular Connection. Churches such as Juan Grapois (Argentina), Charo Castello (Spain) and João Pedro Stedil (Brazil).
Those invited to represent the popular movements of different continents were Anuka Trimadura, (La Via Campesina, Asia), Rose Molokone (Slum Dwellers International, Africa), Alejandro Gramajo (Popular Economy UTEP Labor Union, Latin America), Susana Refega. (Laudato si’ Movement, Europe), Naema Yaqoub (Mediterranean Saving Humans / Refugees in Libya, Africa), Nicole Leiva (Puente Alto Chile, Latin America) and Gloria Morales (Pico Network, North America).
In addition, a book is being released that compiles Pope Francis’ addresses to popular movements raised by the 3Ts and other texts, and a commemorative video of ten years has also been released.
