Ah, PS3 emulation on Sony’s current console is the eternal dream. This is a talking point that dates back to the early days of the PS4, when it was confirmed that the last-gen console would not be compatible with previous games. The conversation has continued ever since, bursting into life whenever a PlayStation patent surfaced, or was brought up by a semi-reliable informant.
For years, rumors have stated that Sony has an official PS3 emulator in the works – but no concrete proof has ever been discovered. And now things are starting to take off again thanks to recent whispers on social media and the like. However, there’s a bit more weight to the current conversation, as insider reporter Jeff Grubb has commented on PS3 emulation via the latest release Morning chaos game Podcast.
Grubb has reason to believe that Sony has been working on said emulation “for some time.” He went on to say that he first heard about the initiative earlier this year, and originally thought it would be unveiled sooner than then. However, Grubb doesn’t seem convinced that PS3 emulation is a sure thing: “Obviously that hasn’t happened, but that doesn’t mean it’ll never happen – it might happen.”
Whether it happens or not, PS3 emulation is making headlines once again. There’s no escaping the fact that many great games are trapped on Sony’s last-gen system – and it would be a real shame if things stayed that way.
