Four years ago, my then-colleague Vlad brought you news of an 18,000 mAh battery that had a phone inside it. Well, I'm happy to report that Avenir Telecom is back on the scene, but only now it has a smartphone with a 28,000 mAh battery. This, in this industry, is what we call progress.
The device itself is called the Hard Case P28K, and like its predecessor, it will be sold under the Energizer brand (which Avenir has licensed from the battery manufacturer). The company claims that the P28K's battery is large enough to last for a full week of regular use. The device also has a very solid IP69 rating to survive the kinds of off-grid adventures you might want to take away from a charging point. Talk time is rated at 122 hours (or just over five days) while standby time extends to 2,252 hours, or Approximately 94 days.
The downside is that it is an absolute unit. in At 27.8mm thick, weighing 570g, the P28K hard case is more than three times the thickness and weight of the iPhone 15. So, look, don't buy this thing if you want something stylish. It can charge at up to 33W at speeds, and we followed up with Avenir Telecom to estimate how long it would take to fully charge.
If you have to insist on treating this thing like a regular smartphone, its specs are entry-level. There is no 5G, and its processor is the MediaTek MT6789. You get 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, three rear cameras, Android 14, and a 6.78-inch 1080p LCD screen.
Avenir Telecom plans to sell the Energizer Hard Case P28K for €249.99 when it goes on sale in October this year. It will be available globally, but not in the United States.
Updated February 25, 3:38 PM ET: Updated to note maximum fast charging speed of 33W.
