Several explosions rocked the city of Kiev and the entire Ukraine was put on alert as Russia launched a wave of air strikes.

The Polish Armed Forces said the Lviv region bordering Poland was also targeted and one of the cruise missiles entered Polish airspace.

The attacks began in the capital at 05:00 (03:00 GMT).

The Ukrainian army said that its air defense systems participated in repelling the attack.

Serhiy Popko, head of the military administration in Kiev, said that about ten Russian missiles were destroyed over the capital and its surrounding areas.

He added in a statement on the Telegram application that there were no reports of casualties or serious damage as a result of the attacks.

Andrei Sadovy, Mayor of Lviv, said via the Telegram app that the city itself was not bombed. However, around 20 missiles and seven attack drones were launched into the wider Lviv area, targeting “critical infrastructure”.

Ukraine was earlier put on nationwide alert, warning of the launch of cruise missiles from Russian strategic bombers.

Meanwhile, Poland said its airspace had been violated by one of the cruise missiles launched by Russia.

The armed forces said in a statement: “The object entered Polish space near the town of Ocerdo and remained there for 39 seconds. During the entire flight, it was detected by military radar systems.”

Residents of the Ukrainian capital were filmed taking shelter in metro stations.

Moscow has not yet commented on Sunday's strikes.

The governor of the port of Sevastopol in the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula said that Russian forces shot down ten Ukrainian missiles over the city late Saturday evening.

Mikhail Razvozaev said on the Telegram application that an administrative building and a gas line were destroyed, and a woman was injured by shrapnel.
