Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens open Raw
Sami Zayn was given a standing ovation that lasted for at least five minutes.
Rhea Ripley has a cool new T-shirt that reads “Monday Night Mami.”
Zine welcomed Quebec City to the French in mega pop hits. Kevin Owens returned to support Zayn at Doomsday Showdown (sans J.D. McDonagh), and Owens cut his own French promo to the blaring pop.
WWE Raw Opening Segment Grade: B+
New day bt. Riddle and McIntyre
Matt Riddle received a tepid response, which is what happens when you lose a clean for weeks on end.
Fans went wild when Drew McIntyre was tagged in as his seemingly inevitable heel turn loomed.
Fans really got into the attack on Riddle as The New Day worked the match as de facto heels.
The Vikings Raiders stalled, resulting in another loss to Riddle, but McIntyre chased them down. Looks like Glasstwo brothers You will be a thing for now.
The New Day vs. Riddle and McIntyre Grade: B-
Chad Gabel Dave. GUNTHER by Countout
JD is again locked out of the doomsday business, this time by Rhea Ripley.
GUNTHER is 18 days away from breaking The Honky Tonk Man’s record, so it’s almost impossible to imagine Gable hitting the world tonight. Having said that, this crowd was significantly behind Gable.
Michael Cole gave a well-timed whoop to first-ever IC Champion Pat Patterson.
I don’t know how they did it, but this match was full of drama, and the crowd ate it up as if Gable had a shot at winning the belt.
Gable took the fight to GUNTHER, eventually winning the match via countout with a German suplex over the barricade. Gable became the first WWE Superstar to defeat Gunther in a singles match. I wouldn’t oppose this chase that extends beyond GUNTHER to break the record, only for Gable to win the title the next day.
GUNTHER vs. Gable Grade: A-
Cody Rhodes Promo
Cody Rhodes has compared JD McDonagh to Funko Pop due to his large head and small body.
Rhodes decided to come out to the arena rather than cut a backstage promo, and fans immediately started cheering him on.
After dropping the “JBL and Cole Show” name, Cody Rhodes also shouted out to Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn for more of the Quebec crowd’s good graces.
This promo really seemed like an excuse to get Rhodes on TV.
Cody Rhodes Promotional Score: B
Rhea Ripley Dev. Candice Larry
Wade Barrett started making excuses to Candice LeRae just as the bell rang, claiming that LeRae hasn’t been up against high level competition lately.
LeRae got an insult wave before being submitted by an upside down clover leaf.
Raquel Rodriguez limped out into the ring. Considering the fact that she must have been about to get purged, Ripley should have known that she was sexy, as she was.
Raquel Rodriguez announced that she was medically cleared, and confirmed that it would be Ripley vs. Rodriguez at Payback. If Rodriguez really needs a crutch this week, her injury may have been slower than Roderick Strong’s recovery.
Shinsuke Nakamura revealed that he whispered to Rollins, “I know something about your back.” Rollins later confirmed that he had had two fractures in his lumbar spine over the past four years.
Ripley vs. Larry Class: C
Akira Tozawa Def. The distinction
Fans wanted to see Maryse (who is from Montreal) but Miz shut it down immediately.
WWE’s passive-aggressive smear campaign on LA Knight continued, this time with The Miz calling Knight a WWE Hoobastank.
Knight’s response was as grand as ever in Quebec City. Knight joined Michael Cole and Wade Barrett on commentary, but not before showering the Miz with tissue paper.
Considering how much Miz overplayed Tozawa—a hand-picked opponent that Miz chose because he was defeatable—Miz losing was the most likely outcome.
Miz continued to mock Knight by comparing him to MySpace and Beanie Babies.
Tozawa’s match against Miz goes on a commercial break, which bodes well for Tozawa.
Miz lost clean to Tozawa. Knight didn’t even intervene. So here’s a feud between WWE Superstars who can’t seem to get a win lately.
Miz vs. Tozawa Grade: B-
Trish Stratus and Becky Lynch vs
Becky Lynch was treated like a Canadian champ over Trish Stratus during this exchange.
Fans greeted Trish Stratus warmly and thanked her until she turned heel on them. From there, fans were all over Trish throughout her promo, especially when she took a shot at Justin Trudeau.
The fans interrupted Trish with several French chants that no one understood.
Trish-Becky Segment Grade: C+
Green and Niven Dave. Chance and Carter
The story of this match was Chelsea Greene being the obvious weak link while Piper Niven took down Chance and Carter for the win. After figuratively holding Green during the match, Niven carried Green back herself.
Greene and Niven vs. Chance and Carter Grade: J
Rhodes, Owens and Zayn Dave. Doomsday
This started as a tag team main event with Damien Priest and Finn Balor brawling early on. The match ended in a DQ when Kevin Owens used a MITBITB briefcase.
As promised, Cody Rhodes evened the odds, making this match a six-man tag.
The good Canadian boys, and American Nightmare, took the win to send fans home happy. Owens was selling an injury after that, so I hope it’s just a story.
Sami cut an advertisement in French after the match, which would set the Guinness World Record for French spoken on an English-language broadcast of Raw.
Raw main event score: B+
