Does anyone remember the ice bucket challenge? What about the no makeup selfie? In recent years we’ve seen the rise of social media campaigns as a way to raise awareness, and it’s been largely effective. It doesn’t cost anything, it’s fun and it allows people to show solidarity with a cause they care about. This week, power couple Amber and Giovanni Testino launched an online initiative aimed at addressing environmental concerns. This is in response to the cancelled rally in Paris on November 29th, and ties in with the UN Conference that started this week. The husband and wife team have rallied their fashion industry pals including Giovanni’s brother, a small photographer named Mario Testino, Charlotte Tilbury, Jefferson Hack and big time models Anya Rubik and Natalia Vodianova.
In a document available online, the Testino’s write “We are asking our friends in the fashion industry to help raise awareness by joining together in a digital #ClimateCatwalk symbolizing us all walking in the same direction to a sustainable future”. Amber Testino told wwd.com “We thought, why don’t we reach out to people in our industry and call them to be part of an online march? If people don’t wake up and say something about this or do something about this, we’re going to miss the chance and it’s going to be too late”. So, how do you take part in the challenge?
- Film yourself or someone else from head to toe, walking from the left to the right, in your own interpretation of a #ClimateCatwalk.
- Post it to Instagram and tag all your friends to a walk-off and see if they can do it better than you within 48 hours. Don’t forget to hashtag #ClimateCatwalk #ClimateMarch and include the message: #COP21 Paris Climate Action Now!
