Robot lawn mowers are becoming more capable of handling the finishing work that traditionally requires a string trimmer. New models from Anker and Mammotion unveiled at IFA 2026 combine autonomous mowing with dedicated edge-trimming systems designed to cut grass along driveways, flower beds, fences and other boundaries.
Anker Eufy S2 Max Adds an Extendable Trimming Arm
Anker’s Eufy Robot Lawn Mower S2 Max features an extendable trimming arm intended to reach areas that a conventional robotic mower may leave untouched. The system could reduce the need for homeowners to follow up with a Weedwacker or similar lawn tool after an automated mowing session.
The dual-blade mower uses visual simultaneous localization and mapping, or vSLAM, with integrated cameras to create a 3D map of a property. That approach eliminates the need to install physical boundary wires or set up a real-time kinematic, or RTK, base station.
Anker says the S2 Max can map and maintain lawns covering as much as 3.7 acres. Its all-wheel-drive system is also designed to tackle slopes of up to 80 percent, equivalent to an incline of about 38 degrees.
U.S. Price and Availability Have Not Been Announced
The Eufy Robot Lawn Mower S2 Max is scheduled to launch in May 2027 with a European price of €3,999.
Anker has not yet announced U.S. pricing or availability. If it reaches the American market, the mower would compete in a growing category of premium robotic lawn-care equipment aimed at homeowners seeking greater automation for larger properties.
Built-in edging is also appearing on robot mowers from Segway, Ecovacs and Roborock, reflecting a broader push to automate tasks beyond simply cutting the main lawn.
Mammotion Luba 4 AWD Targets Lawn Edges and Borders
Mammotion is taking a similar approach with its newly announced Luba 4 AWD. The robotic mower uses an edge-cutting attachment designed to trim grass close to walls, fences, garden borders and other areas that are often difficult for autonomous mowers to reach.
Navigation is handled through a combination of four cameras positioned around the front, sides and rear, a 360-degree lidar system and network RTK technology that uses cloud connectivity.
Mammotion says the three-part sensing system is designed to provide “zero dead zones and zero drift,” helping the mower maintain its position as it travels around a property.
Independent Steering Could Help Prevent Lawn Tracks
The Luba 4 AWD also includes independent front-wheel steering. Mammotion says the design allows the mower to change direction without making traditional U-turns.
That could have a practical benefit for lawn appearance, since repeated sharp turns can leave visible tracks or disturb grass in frequently traveled areas.
The combination of cameras, lidar and RTK also reflects how robotic lawn equipment is adopting increasingly sophisticated navigation technology. Instead of relying primarily on perimeter wires, newer machines can identify their surroundings, map properties and navigate obstacles with less physical setup.
Robot Lawn Mowers Move Beyond Basic Grass Cutting
Automated lawn mowers have traditionally focused on keeping grass at a consistent height, while homeowners still needed separate tools to clean up edges and hard-to-reach areas.
The latest generation is attempting to close that gap.
Edge-trimming attachments could be particularly useful along sidewalks, driveways, patios, fences and landscaped beds — common features in suburban U.S. yards where a mower’s main cutting deck may not reach the final strip of grass.
The technology also highlights increasing competition among manufacturers to turn robot mowers into more complete lawn-maintenance systems rather than single-purpose machines.
For consumers, questions around price, reliability and real-world trimming performance will remain important. The Eufy S2 Max’s U.S. launch details are also still unknown.
Still, the new models from Anker and Mammotion show where robotic lawn care is heading: autonomous machines that not only mow the yard but increasingly handle the detail work around its edges as well.
