ChatGPT arrives on Mac in a new OpenAI app ahead of WWDC

Today on OpenAI Major spring updatethe company announced that ChatGPT will soon become more accessible thanks to a new desktop app launched on Mac.

The new Mac app makes ChatGPT even more accessible to users

Apple and OpenAI were recently rumored to be partnering ahead of WWDC. This partnership will bring ChatGPT to iOS 18 as a built-in chatbot option integrated into the system.

Prior to this partnership, OpenAI announced its first-party ChatGPT app that will be available on Mac. The application is designed to make ChatGPT easily accessible and always available to users. A very brief preview of the app was shown during the presentation, but more details were shared In a press release.

For both free and paid users, we’re also launching a new ChatGPT desktop app for macOS that’s designed to integrate seamlessly with anything you do on your computer. Using a simple keyboard shortcut (Option + Space), you can ask ChatGPT a question instantly. You can also take screenshots and discuss them directly in the app.

You can now have voice conversations with ChatGPT directly from your computer, starting with the voice mode that was available in ChatGPT at launch, with new audio and video capabilities for GPT-4o coming in the future. Whether you want to pitch a new idea for your company, prepare for an interview or have a topic you’d like to discuss, tap the headphone icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop app to start a voice chat.

ChatGPT for Mac is rolling out today to Plus users, and will be available to all free GPT users in the coming weeks. A Windows app is also scheduled to launch later this year.

Take 9to5Mac

It’s always nice to have a new Mac app for the first time. I always prefer a native app experience over using a web app, and that’s no different with ChatGPT.

Previously, Mac users were limited to using ChatGPT via a web client or third-party application. Nearly a year ago, OpenAI introduced an iPhone app for ChatGPT, but it was not known if the AI-powered service would receive a dedicated Mac app. It’s great to see this change today before more OpenAI-related Apple news emerges in the coming weeks.
