Both “Shogun” and “The Bear” were Emmy nominees. They were huge hits from the start.

FX’s “Shogun” won 14 creative arts and acting awards at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards over the weekend, setting a record for the most Emmy wins for a series in a single year. “The Bear” also won seven Emmys over the weekend, placing it second in Emmy wins so far this year.

Although the Creative Arts Emmy Awards aren’t ready for primetime broadcast — the event includes awards for guest acting achievements and specialty areas like picture editing and stunt work — the awards are counted the same way in the Emmy record books, so the leaderboard is officially ready.

With wins in categories such as production design, cinematography and visual effects, “Shogun” has already broken the record set by HBO’s 2008 miniseries “John Adams,” which won 13 Emmys, and “Game of Thrones,” which won 12 Emmys three times.

“Shogun” is up for Oscars at Sunday’s ceremony in six categories, including best drama, best actor and best actress, and could expand its record awards total even further.

Last week, FX won Best Drama Ensemble, a prize that was a predictor of a Best Drama Series win. Similarly, “The Bear” won Best Comedy Ensemble — a series that has won Best Comedy eight times out of ten.
