Google is changing cookie pop-ups on Google Search and YouTube in Europe. A new cookie banner is already being rolled out, and the main change it introduces is the incorporation of a “Deny All” button to prevent all unnecessary cookies from being set and no non-essential data to be collected.
The personalization page displays several options, including YouTube history, search customization, or customization of ads, which can be turned on or off on the site.
A new cookie banner is now rolling out in Europe that gives users an easier option to block all but essential cookies.
Google notes in the announcement that this will be available on Google Search and YouTube in Europe for visitors who are not signed in to a Google account at the time or in incognito mode. Rollout has begun in France and Google plans to deliver the updated cookie banner to all EEA member states, the United Kingdom and Switzerland soon (Google has not provided details).
Accordingly, Google will use a basic set of cookies and data regardless of the user’s choice. The data is used to “deliver and maintain Google services”, track outages, protect against spam, fraud, and abuse, and “measure audience interaction and site statistics”.
The optional set of cookies and data is used only if the user chooses “accept all” or keeps certain options on the personalization page turned on. Users who have selected the new “Deny All” button will no longer collect these items:
- Develop and improve new services.
- Presenting and measuring the effectiveness of advertisements.
- Show custom content, based on your settings.
- Show personalized ads, based on your settings.
Some companies and organizations make it difficult for users to refuse all unnecessary cookies. The introduction of a prominently displayed “Reject All” option as the “Accept All” button is a step in the right direction.
