Intel confirms that Meteor Lake CPUs will be coming to desktop PCs in 2024

Intel has confirmed that it will bring Meteor Lake CPUs to its desktop platform in 2024 amid various cancellation rumours.

Intel Meteor Lake CPUs will come to desktops in 2024, Intel EVP of Customer Computing Group confirms

Confirmation comes from an interview with Computer scientist Intel’s Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Client Computing Group said that Meteor Lake CPUs will be coming in 2024. It appears that Meteor Lake CPUs are once again on the table to see the light of day on desktop computers after various rumors and leaks hinted that they were… The CPU family has been canceled and the chipmaker will instead focus on Arrow Lake for its desktop CPU lineup. Below is the text of the interview:

[PCWorld – Mark Hachman] s- Let me ask you, will there be a Meteor Lake desktop?

[Michelle Johnston Holthaus – Intel EVP/GM of CCG] a – Desktop is coming in 2024.

[PCWorld – Mark Hachman] s- So you confirm Meteor Lake desktop?

[Michelle Johnston Holthaus – Intel EVP/GM of CCG] a – Yes.

[PCWorld – Mark Hachman] s – Whether or not you guys are going back to an era where there will be a mobile processor family and a separate desktop processor family, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

[Michelle Johnston Holthaus – Intel EVP/GM of CCG] a – This is not the case. I want one processor family from top to bottom for both classes, right?

Intel’s Meteor Lake CPUs are largely a CCG (Intel Client Computing Group) chip, so for Michel to actually confirm that the product family is coming to desktops is a big deal. This also gives us a new perspective on how Intel will roll out its next-generation CPU platform that may include not one but two distinct product families in 2024.

The 1st Gen Core Ultra Meteor Lake CPUs will apparently be coming to mobile platforms like the recently revealed laptops for the first time starting December 14, so we can expect the new desktop parts to be revealed by CES 2024 which will be on Less than a month after the launch of Meteor Lake CPUs on mobile.

Meteor Lake CPUs were previously expected to come in 6+8 configurations derived from their Meteor Lake-P siblings, but it remains to be seen if those plans change and we get something new. The CPUs will be the successor to Intel’s 14th generation and latest LGA 1700 socket CPU family codenamed Raptor Lake Refresh.

So far we’ve heard about the Intel 800-series platform which will be based on the LGA 1851 socket and will offer significant I/O and platform improvements to accommodate Meteor Lake and next-gen Arrow Lake-S CPUs. Intel Arrow Lake-S desktop CPUs are planned for late 2024, so Meteor Lake-S desktop CPUs will have some time to take over the market.

Regardless of configurations, the Meteor Lake-S CPUs will be a welcome update over the Raptor Lake Refresh lineup that doesn’t offer much besides clock speed increases and the new Core i7 SKU. Meanwhile, Meteor Lake will introduce new P-Core (Redwood Cove) and E-Core (Crestmont) architectures along with new Arc Xe-LPG graphics that will truly shake up the iGPU segment.
