Hyundai and Kia Motors advise owners of certain models to park their vehicles outside and away from structures as they may catch fire. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this week.
The recall affects 245,030 vehicles from Hyundai Palisade SUV Model 2020-2022 and 36,417 vehicles Kia Telluride SUV model From the same years, according to the NHTSA.
The two manufacturers estimate that 1% of recalled cars are defective. Sale of affected models has been discontinued as required by federal regulations.
Both models have a faulty hitch system that can let moisture in and cause a short circuit, which could result in a fire.
Documents released by NHTSA on Tuesday reveal that manufacturers have yet to figure out how to fix the defect. Hyundai will offer temporary repair This will remove the fuse from the hitch unit to eliminate the risk of fire.

Both Hyundai and Kia He said owners of damaged vehicles will receive a notice in the mail in October ordering them to take their vehicle to a dealer for inspection and possible repair.
