The Squid Game series is back, and Netflix has released the first trailer for the long-awaited second season. The trailer comes as the latest announcement for the platform’s annual fan event, Geeked Week.
The trailer begins by telling the story immediately following the end of the first season, when Seung Ji-hoon abandons his plans to go to the United States and instead embarks on a daring pursuit with a new motive. In the short trailer, he is seen dressed as 456 among a crowd of new contestants. Another huge cash prize awaits them, along with a sneak peek at the upcoming games.
The globally successful Korean series follows individuals struggling with financial hardships as they compete in deadly games for a chance to win a life-changing prize, revealing the depths of human despair and resilience.
In the second season, Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, and Jung Yoo reprise their roles as survivors of the bloody elimination game.
The cast of the second season of the series includes Yim Si-wan (“Lawyer,” “Emergency Declaration”), Kang Ha-neul (“Donggoo: Portrait of a Poet”), Park Gyu-young (“Attack on the Gas Station”), Lee Jin-ok, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-gyun, Kang Ae-sim (“Kim Ji-young: Born 1982”), Lee David (“Live Terror”), Choi Sung-hyun, Ro Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won-ji.
Netflix also confirmed Hwang Dong-hyuk’s return as director, writer, and producer. The drama will also be produced by Firstman Studio.
The nine-episode first season was released on Netflix in 2021. It has proven to be an absolute hit for the platform. The first season of “Squid Game” has become Most Watched Non-English TV Series on NetflixThe series has been watched over 2 billion hours on the platform over the course of about eight hours, with a total of 265 million views. The series was also a leading foreign language contender at the Emmy Awards, where it was nominated in 14 categories, including Outstanding Drama Series (a first for a non-English production) and won six awards.
The Squid Game universe has since expanded to include an unscripted competition series, Squid Game: The Challenge, as well as an upcoming video game.
Squid Game Season 2 will premiere on December 26th.
