The first cars equipped with the next generation of CarPlay have been officially announced

Apple has officially delivered on its long-standing promise. The first cars to support next-gen CarPlay have been (sort of) announced. As reported Nice fishing And Car and driverPorsche and Aston Martin will be the first automakers to support next-generation CarPlay starting in 2024.

Notably, Aston Martin was not on Apple’s original list of automakers that would support next-generation CarPlay.

Apple describes next-generation CarPlay as “the ultimate iPhone experience for the car.” It extends CarPlay to all driver displays including the instrument cluster. This results in a “cohesive design experience that represents the best of your car and your iPhone.”

Next-generation CarPlay also includes support for car functions like radio, climate control, and more.

Porsche and Aston Martin’s implementation of next-generation CarPlay will span multiple in-car screens, showcasing the popular CarPlay network of apps, which now powers information, Apple Maps integration, and more. CarPlay also controls the instrument cluster, displaying the speedometer and other details.

Marco Mattiacci, global head of brand and chief commercial officer at Aston Martin, said in a statement:

At Aston Martin, we strive for excellence and performance, which was the main reason we chose to partner with Apple on next-generation CarPlay. Incorporating the latest cutting-edge technology combined with an intuitive, personalized interface is crucial to creating the ultimate Aston Martin customer experience. We look forward to sharing more as we work with Apple to bring next-generation CarPlay to Aston Martins in 2024.

Michael Mauer, Vice President of Porsche Design, said:

We have long been committed to providing Porsche owners with the brand and sporting driving experience synonymous with Porsche. In addition to the sports car itself, digital displays perfectly tailored to our customers are becoming increasingly important to the overall driving experience.

We recently introduced the My Porsche app to CarPlay to provide drivers with easier access to vehicle functions, and in the future we will add support for next-generation CarPlay to Porsche models. We look forward to providing an experience that adds the personal touch of the driver’s iPhone to the exclusivity of the Porsche.

But even though today’s news is the first update we’ve gotten to next-gen CarPlay since WWDC 2022, there are still a large number of unanswered questions.

First, we don’t know which specific Porsche and Aston Martin models will support next-generation CarPlay. We also don’t have any details on whether next-generation CarPlay will come to existing Porsche and Aston Martin vehicles, or whether it will be exclusive to the new models.

Aston Martin has added that next-generation CarPlay is compatible with the latest version of its infotainment system that will debut in 2024 cars. Again, there’s no word on whether older cars will also add it via a software update.
