Two new versions of beloved cinematic horror games will hit the shelves this week, but reactions to both have been very different.
Konami and development team Bloober Team will release the “Silent Hill 2” remake on Tuesday, but the critics’ reviews are already in and they’re very good – the game has an 87/100 on PC and an 86/100 on PC at Metacritic After nearly sixty reviews.
This is the second best score in the series, after the original “Silent Hill 2” (89). It’s a little behind “Resident Evil” 2nd and 4th editions (91 and 93), but much higher than RE 3rd edition (79) and “Resident Evil Village” (84).
Compared to other recent games, it is on par with “Persona 3 Reload,” the “Riven” remake, and “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.”
The consensus from the reviews, none of which were negative and less than 10% of which were mixed, seems to be a successful remake, staying very faithful to the original while effectively updating it.
The same doesn’t seem to be true for Sony’s ‘Until Dawn’ remake for PS5 and PC judging by the responses (via Player). There are very few reviews yet for the Metacritic rating, but audience reviews there and on Steam are decidedly mixed.
Although some Steam reviews represent persistent protests about the PSN requirements, many negative reviews point out frequent crashes and freezes regarding the PC version and optimization issues even on high-end hardware. Others see stuttering, screen tearing, and random errors – all signs of poor optimization.
The few PS5 reviews so far have complained about poor frame rates and crashes as well. There is also controversy over the creative choices made – changing the game’s soundtrack in particular, especially the removal of “O Death”, was met with almost universal negative reception.
Graphics changes are more mixed – there’s appreciation for the higher resolution models, but the new lighting makes the game look very different at some points and removes the moody darkness along with the original’s distinct blue-gray color.
New scenes have been added, some of which are said to hint at a sequel. So far the game has already had one patch made, and more of its votes will be needed.
