He was a Mexican children’s comedian 88 – variety

Children’s comedian and TV icon Xavier Lopez, better known as TV personality Chapelo, has died of ‘abdominal complications’. He was 88 years old.

Best known for his TV show “En Familia con Chabelo” that ran for 48 years from 1967 to 2015, López’s death was officially announced. Twitter page this morning with the following statement: “This is a very sad morning, Xavier Lopez, and Chapelo, father, brother and husband, left us all of a sudden, due to abdominal complications.”

The tweet was then followed by a Statement from the Lopez family“With a shattered soul and knowing that many, many people have loved him for many years and will mourn his passing, we ask that you pray for his comfort and the opportunity to spend in the peace of mourning that envelops all of our family.”

Host of Mexico’s longest-running television show, López has overseen seven decades of children’s programming. The actor has also starred in around 30 movies and acted in countless TV shows as well.

Born in Chicago to Mexican parents, López and his parents moved back to Mexico at an early age. Lopez trained as a doctor before his career as a stand-up comedian, which he believed was his true calling.

Throughout his career and into his later years, López would dress and perform in children’s costumes that would grow to be comic cornerstones throughout the Mexican film scene.

He is survived by his children and wife, Teresita Miranda.
