  • A 238-year-old “haunted” restaurant has seen a “ghost” floating near its door
  • The Library Restaurant in New Hampshire has a long history of hauntings
  • Locals were quick to back up the restaurant’s claims with similar scary stories

The owners of an 18th-century restaurant believe a ‘ghost’ has been caught on camera, with locals flocking to support the sighting with their spooky stories about the restaurant.

The Library Restaurant in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, New Hampshire, uploaded a video earlier this week from their security camera, which showed a “ghost” creepily passing by their restaurant.

Staff say the spirit set off a motion detector while it was floating, and they don’t believe the images could just be lights from a car or a gust of wind.

The restaurant at the Rockingham Hotel has a long history of hauntings that has been documented in detail over the years. It is described as “an elegant mansion dating back to 1785, designed as a cabaret backdrop for steak and wine and a bustling bar scene.”

The 238-year-old business is known to be a magnet for prominent politicians — including Presidents George Washington, Franklin Pierce, and James K. Polk, Theodore Roosevelt, Chester Arthur, William Taft, and John F. Kennedy.

“Our building – Rockingham – is well known for its ghosts, particularly the one in the basement of the library,” the restaurant wrote.

“Last night, for the first time, motion detector alarms inside the building were triggered by camera movement captured on video in the middle of the night outside a window.

“Motion detectors indoors can’t see what the camera sees outside!” They are not lights from the car – because you can see how others are caught and there is no horizontal wind blowing. So what could this be!

“Make of it what you will, but this has never happened before!” A scary coincidence for this time of year?

The terrifying footage has attracted a lot of attention, especially from local customers who have shared their own stories about the “haunted” restaurant.

“The lady in white,” one Facebook user said. Some residents claimed to have seen her in the hallways. One wrote a poem about her experience.

Several people have said that the women’s bathroom in the restaurant is haunted.

“I’ve been to the library a few times and I assure you there is a female ghost in the bathroom area downstairs,” one comment said, and another shared the same claim, saying “This is definitely a ghost and I’ve seen a lot of them. I used to live across the street. The women’s restroom is in the library.” Haunted by ghosts.

But there are skeptics, one of whom is said to be trying to refute the claims, writing: “So are we going to talk about the quick clip in the video in ‘ghost’ time?” Or does the timecode in the upper right corner skip from 02:29:30 to 02:31:04? But yes, completely legitimate and supernatural behavior was captured “on camera”.

One person – who appeared to be frequenting the historic restaurant – speculated: “Mist?” (Or Dave smokes!)’

Another asked: “What am I supposed to see?”

The Rockingham Hotel is believed to be haunted by Sarah Shelburne Langdon or a drowning victim.

Many viewers were sure that the “ghost” was actually fog, wind or steam.

according to HauntedHouses.com The Rockingham Hotel is believed to be haunted by the entity of Sarah Shelburne Langdon or the drowning victim’s entity.

Shelburne Langdon was the daughter of a wealthy merchant who married Woodbury Langdon – who built a three-story mansion on the site of today’s Rockingham Building as a place for his bride and their ten children to live.

Their family home burned in the Great Fire of 1781 and they rebuilt it into “the most beautiful brick house in New England.”

Langdon — who served as a New Hampshire state senator in 1779 for a year — eventually sold his house and it became a public house — selling liquor, serving food, and providing public rooms for events and functions. It then became a hotel in 1833.

Apparently Shelburne Langdon was having an affair with the dashing John Paul Jones – and because of small-town gossip, public opinion condemned her for adultery.

Because the “entities” are allegedly anxious when their guilt is announced – they want to clear their name in the world before they go to the “light and peace of the afterlife.”

For this reason, Shelburne Langdon is believed to inhabit the Rockingham Hotel by wandering the halls and spending time in the Library Restaurant – where women heard her rustling in the bathroom stalls.

The “ghost” of the drowning victim carries the “strong smell of the sea” whenever she seems to haunt the hotel – which was the last place she lived before the drowning.
