Black Myth: Wukong Has a Huge Launch, Surpasses Cyberpunk 2077 to Become Steam’s Most Played Game Ever

Update 2: Black Myth: Wukong has now overtaken Palworld to become the second most played game on Steam ever. At the time of this update, the game had 2,223,179 concurrent players on Valve’s platform, enough to surpass Palworld’s peak concurrent player count of 2,101,867 players from earlier this year.

The question now is, can Black Myth: Wukong reach the top spot, dethroning PUBG after it reached a massive peak of 3,257,248 concurrent players, becoming the most played game on Steam ever?

Update 1: Black Myth: Wukong’s success on Steam continues to grow – it has now surpassed Counter-Strike to become the third most played game of all time on Valve’s platform. At the time of this update, Black Myth: Wukong had 1,950,058 concurrent players. Palworld, with 2,101,867 concurrent players, is certainly in Black Myth: Wukong’s crosshairs.

Original story: Black Myth: Wukong has had a massive launch on Steam, surpassing Cyberpunk 2077 to become the most played single-player game ever on Valve’s platform.

The action RPG, developed by Chinese studio Game Science, launched in the early hours of this morning and quickly shot to the top of Steam’s most-played games chart with 1,443,570 concurrent players. That number is sure to grow as the work week draws to a close and more people buy the game.

Less than 24 hours after launch, Black Myth: Wukong has the fourth-highest concurrent play count on Steam, behind PUBG (3,257,248), Palworld (2,101,867), and Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 (1,818,773). It’s ahead of big names like Dota 2, Elden Ring, and Baldur’s Gate 3. The game has already racked up nearly 30,000 user reviews on Steam, with a “Very Positive” user review rating.

Black Myth: Wukong will have a bigger launch than Steam suggests. It’s also set to release on PlayStation 5 (Sony Interactive Entertainment doesn’t make PlayStation player numbers publicly available), Tencent’s Chinese gaming portal WeGame, and the Epic Games Store. An Xbox Series X and S version is slated for release later (find out why) here).

IGN Black Myth: Wukong Game Review We gave it an 8/10 rating. We said, “Despite some annoying technical issues, Black Myth: Wukong is a great action game with great combat, exciting bosses, enticing secrets, and a beautiful world.”
