Just days after Nintendo sued developer Pocketpair for alleged patent infringement, Pokemon with guns Palworld has appeared at Sony’s State of Play in a surprise announcement: the game is finally available on PS5, starting today.
The monster-fighting adventure was embodied during today’s State of Play by a player character cheekily designed to look a bit like Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn, with a team of friends.
We didn’t see any new details about the game in the trailer, but it ended with a message that the game was released today on PS5.
The launch of Palworld on PS5 comes after news that Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are suing developer Pocketpair, alleging that Palworld infringes on several of their patents. While fans have speculated for months that the company would sue Pocketpair, speculation has largely revolved around the similarities between some of Palworld’s monster designs and those of Pokemon. However, the actual lawsuit revolves around patented game mechanics, leaving many wondering how it will actually play out in Japanese courts.
Palworld launched in Early Access in January of this year on PC and Xbox as a day one Game Pass title. We gave its Early Access launch an 8/10, saying it “may take a lot of the Pokémon homework, but the deep survival mechanics and hilarious attitude make it hard to stop playing — even in Early Access.”
