Award-winning American guitarist Al Di Meola He suffered a heart attack during a performance in the Romanian capital, but is now in a stable condition and receiving treatment, a hospital spokesman said on Thursday.
The 69-year-old De Meola began performing at a venue in Bucharest on Wednesday at 9 p.m. Dragos Cristescu, a photographer who attended the concert told The Associated Press that he saw Di Meola clutching his chest during the performance and that the guitarist struggled to leave the stage. The other two members of Di Meola’s trio continued to play for several minutes until it was announced that the show would be interrupted.
In a statement, De Miola was admitted to the Cardiovascular Care Unit at Baghdazar-Arseny Emergency Hospital, where he is being treated for a segment-elevated myocardial infarction, or STEMI.
According to the Cleveland Clinic Healthcare website, a STEMI primarily affects the lower chambers of the heart and “can be more severe and fatal compared to other types of heart attacks.”
Di Meola’s decades-long career has earned him critical acclaim and numerous awards, including a Grammy. One of De Miola’s most famous songs “Mediterranean Sundance”It was part of their 1977 album Elegant Gypsy. According to its official website, it has sold more than 6 million records worldwide.
