Fenerbahce vs Manchester United live: Europa League result and final result after Jose Mourinho’s expulsion

Fenerbahce vs Manchester United live: Europa League result and final result after Jose Mourinho’s expulsion
Mourinho has confirmed that his team can still win the 2018 Premier League title

Jose Mourinho was sent off when Fenerbahce drew with his former club Manchester United 1-1 in the Europa League, leaving Erik Ten Hag’s side without a win in three European matches this season.

Mourinho was sent off by referee Clement Turpin after calling for a penalty kick midway through the second half. The 61-year-old watched the remainder of the match from the stands.

This came after Youssef En-Nesyri equalized for Fenerbahce by beating Andre Onana with a header after the Manchester United goalkeeper blocked him with a wonderful double shot before the end of the first half.

United’s defense was poor and it came with the Ten Hag side slumping after Christian Eriksen’s 15th-minute opener, the midfielder finishing off a crucial counter-attack.

United remain winless in the Europa League after previous draws against Twente and Porto. It has now been a year since their last European win: a 1-0 win over Copenhagen at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho steals the show to tell Manchester United what they are missing

Jose Mourinho’s red cards are usually considered an aberration, but Thursday night may have served that purpose for Erik ten Hag. This raucous game with plenty of subplots is perhaps the most entertaining show in Europe this season, if not all for good reasons or with any real payoff.

This is Manchester United on the field, and Mourinho off it. The Portuguese failed to exact proper revenge on his old club, but United have now failed to maximize their lead in every Europa League game this season. This tumultuous 1-1 draw against Fenerbahce was the third draw in three matches, and any positives were again offset by clear drawbacks. Youssef En-Nesyri, who completed Ten Hag’s first season in the Europa League while at Sevilla in 2022-23, here ended any sense of momentum following the win over Brentford.

There was also the scene of Mourinho being sent off rather harshly for complaining about how a penalty claim was rejected. The cuts made to Ten Hag’s predecessor in a move here meant that there wasn’t the same scrutiny of Ten Hag’s current problems. United don’t seem to be offering any form. This was actually a regression to another issue.

Erik Ten Hag’s reaction to Manchester United’s draw at Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce is a very good club, they have very good fans and some good players. It will be a very good final. We must keep the ball better in the first half. We should score more goals but to be honest, they also created good chances. They caused us some problems. They are a good team with a good manager. It’s not a bad point. But we want to win. We want to win every game.”

Erik Ten Hag’s reaction to Manchester United’s draw at Fenerbahce

Manchester United coach Erik Ten Hag spoke about his side’s winless start to the Europa League, where they took the lead three times but drew all three matches.

“Two tough away games. Of course when you take the initiative, it is [drawing] It wasn’t supposed to happen, we had chances to score the second goal. Disappointed not to win. At Old Trafford we have to win games.”

Jose Mourinho’s final word: Good result for Manchester United

Jose Mourinho on Andre Onana’s performance: “Come on, he saved the score. My goalkeeper didn’t make a save, he made two impossible saves in 10 seconds. He was the most decisive player in the score. Of course he didn’t make 20 saves, but he made two incredible saves.

Jose Mourinho also insisted that Fenerbahce deserved to win the match and said his team had performed “an exceptional performance.” United were saved by a brilliant display from goalkeeper Andre Onana, who Mourinho said was the best player in the match.

“They got a point against us, not us against them. We played amazingly well. If we play like this in the Turkish League we ruin everything because of course we played against a team of a higher level than us. The Premier League has more quality, more intensity and everything.

“I think my boys played an amazing game. People in England probably talk about two or three Manchester United players who didn’t play, you don’t know how many of us didn’t play. At first we had four players out, and we had injuries. We had to do a crazy puzzle. “Our performance was exceptional. I can’t ask for more from the players.”

Jose Mourinho’s reaction to the ‘astonishing’ red card against Manchester United

Jose Mourinho was in fine form as referee Clement Turpin described him as “the best in the world” after being sent off during Fenerbahce’s draw with former club Manchester United in the Europa League.

“That’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world!”

Full time! Fenerbahce 1-1 Manchester United

Erik Ten Hag’s side are in a “terrible position” in the Europa League, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes said on TNT Sports.

“The two results you have to say: Porto away, a tough place to go to, good draw. Fenerbahce away, good draw. It’s the home game that was really disappointing, the Twente game, you should have beaten those teams,” he says. .

United have also lost leads in all three of their Europa League matches this season.

Smiling before the match kicks off. I’m not sure Mourinho will be very happy now. We hope to hear from both directors soon.

Full time! Fenerbahce 1-1 Manchester United

Strangely, not much happened in the match after Mourinho’s red card. The last half hour was poor after an enjoyable contest up to that point.

Is it a good draw for United? Fenerbahce is always a difficult place to go to. But given the pressure on Ten Hag, perhaps he needed more.

Full time! Fenerbahce 1-1 Manchester United

Well that sums it up! United were awarded a direct free kick inside Fenerbahce’s half. Instead of shooting into the penalty area, they passed it back to Andre Onana and the referee blew the whistle for the end of the match.

A good result for Jose Mourinho’s team. A poor goal for Erik Ten Hag, as United remain winless in the Europa League.

They have now gone six straight games without a win in Europe for the first time since 1981.
