A man claiming to be Janet Jackson’s former manager says he was fired by the pop star and her brother Randy over disagreements after an article published over the weekend in The Guardian The 58-year-old actress revealed that Vice President Kamala Harris is “not black.”
“Janet Jackson fired me due to disagreements between me, her and Randy, after her meeting with the Guardian and her unbalanced statements,” Mohamed Elmasry said in an emailed statement to The Daily Beast.
“That’s all I can say,” he added. When asked to comment further, he said he couldn’t “take phone calls because of the volume,” adding, “All my support for Kamala Harris.”
This comes after an unexpected development on Sunday when Jackson’s representatives confirmed that an “apology” offered by an Egyptian “business manager” on the singer’s behalf was never made or approved by the singer.
Jackson made headlines Saturday after a viral interview with The Guardianwhere the 58-year-old claimed Harris was “not black.”
“That’s what I heard,” Jackson said. The Guardian“She’s Indian. Her father is white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told they found out her father is white.”
Jackson echoed talking points that were already debunked in July, when Donald Trump, Harris’s opponent in the 2024 Republican primary, questioned her race.
“I didn’t know she was black until a few years ago when she came out as black and now she wants to be known as black,” he said at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago.
Harris is the first African-American and Asian-American vice president. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was born in India, while her father, Donald J. Harris, was born in Jamaica.
After the apparent apology first reported by BuzzfeedJackson’s representatives confirmed to Variety that the message was sent by someone they said was not authorized to speak on her behalf.
“Janet Jackson would like to clarify her recent comments,” Buzzfeed’s apology, reported by Elmasri, read.
“She recognizes that her statements regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity were based on misinformation. Janet respects Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian and apologizes for any confusion she caused. She appreciates the diversity Harris represents and understands the importance of celebrating that in today’s society. Janet remains committed to promoting unity and understanding.”
Variety reports that Jackson is actually being managed by her brother Randy. The couple are said to be offline as they grieve the death of their older brother Tito, who died last week.
Delivery date Elmasri is reportedly listed as Jackson’s manager on her IMDb page. Elmasri is also listed on another industry site, Celebrity ServiceAs its manager. The site says his status was last verified on September 22.
